Abbott's Set for Governor Move, Attorney Joe B Garza Explains

With Rick Perry moving on, Texans will elect a new governor in 2014. The current Attorney General of Texas, Greg Abbott, announced in July that he would run. He will have several advantages in the race. First, he has held the office since 2002. Because he has not faced a formidable appointment in his previous contests, he has accumulated a war chest that stood as $18 million as of the end of 2012. He enjoys a name-recognition advantage due to the office he holds and the legal victories the Perry administration has achieved against the federal Environmental Protection Agency. He has a distinguished political résumé; among other things, he has served as a justice on the Texas Supreme Court. He has a compelling personal story; he has succeeded despite suffering an injury as a young man that forces him to use a wheelchair. Finally, if he prevails against Tom Pauken, a former chairman of the Texas Workforce Commission, in the Republican primary, he will run against a Democrat for the office of governor in a conservative state where Democrats have not won an election for a state-wide office since 1994.

Joe B. Garza Talks Big Data’s Ever-Growing Clout

“Big Data” is a loosely-defined phrase, but refers to the use of technology to gather massive amounts of data for what are usually commercial purposes. The use of data is obviously of great importance in advertising and marketing; for example, businesses can learn more about their target audience’s behavior by gathering data from social media posts and neighborhood demographics. But Big Data’s uses go well beyond marketing. An airline company can gather data on every flight it offers to customers, and then analyze the data to identify safety concerns or potential manufacturing improvements. Executives will have troves of data to better evaluate their employees’ productivity. Financial analysts and money managers will be able to conduct more exhaustive analyses of stock market performance.

The effects of Big Data are certain to spread into culture and education as well, not simply business. For example, applications capable of instantly translating foreign languages could very well lead to less of an emphasis on learning a foreign language, similar to how word processing lessened the importance of cursive writing.

But Big Data has its downsides too. Privacy concerns will inevitably arise (as seen by the National Security Agency’s surveillance of Americans’ communications), and the potential to misuse huge amounts of detailed data on people is self-evident. Nevertheless, the commercial potential of Big Data will ensure that enterprises continue to develop it.

Opponents Have Cow Over Spitzer Run

The Wall Street Journal published an editorial last month questioning Eliot Spitzer's candidacy for NYC Comptroller. In 2008, Spitzer abruptly forfeited his position as state governer after the public discovered that he had used an escort service, but the WSJ editorial directs its focus primarily to Spitzer's actions during his tenure as the New York Attorney General. While serving in that position, he appeared to be a figure capable of taking on interests in Wall Street.

However, Spitzer faced criticism of abusing his power, with figures like the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, John Whitehead, claiming that the then-AG Spitzer issued threatening remarks to Whitehead after he had written an positive editorial piece favoring Hank Greenberg who, at the time, was the CEO of American Int'l Group (AIG), and one of Spitzer's targets. Spitzer allegedly told Witehead that he would "Pay the price" and that it was "only the will pay dearly for what you have done."

Back in 2005, Thomas Donahue was the current president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and was vocal in his disapproval of Eliot Spitzer, going on-record with the following:

"Spitzer's approach is to walk in and say, 'We're going to make a deal, and you're going to pay $600 million to the state, and you're going to get rid of this person and that person, and if you don't do it by tonight, we're going to indict the company'...It is the most egregious and unacceptable form of intimidation we've seen in this country in modern times."

While the concerns about Spitzer are in no short supply, his political identity seems to have regained its footing. As of this month, Spitzer holds a 19-point-lead among projected voting Democrats in the primary that will be held on September 10th.
